Flo

Flo Grant, a Stamford High School alum, is expected to graduate from Northeastern University in June 2018. Flo’s connections to the Future 5 staff and many of the coaches remain strong, and she has just landed a prestigious Northeastern co-op position at NBC’s Today Show starting this summer.

Unfortunately, Flo’s life has been filled with tragedy and turmoil. Just days after her 16th birthday, she lost her mother to cancer, then lived with her grandmother, who had major health issues and financial insecurity. Despite all of these difficulties, Flo continued to persevere in school, maintaining excellent grades. When she joined Future 5 during her junior year, Flo had all of the right ingredients but was a shy and quiet soul looking for help, particularly with the college process. She wanted to go to college, but did not have a clue how to apply or where she should go.

Flo always knew she wanted to be a television/movie producer. She attended our Job Prep and College Prep workshops and Debbie Eagan was assigned to be her college coach. Debbie and Flo formed a special bond and we all began to see that spark of confidence ignite. Interning at “It’s Relevant,” an online video company, fanned her career aspirations. During high school she was a member of the National Honor Society and the senior prom queen! Graduating from Stamford High School, Flo was selected to be a Martin Luther King Scholar at Ithaca College and was also offered a full scholarship to Northeastern University. Northeastern selected Flo from hundreds of applicants throughout the country as one of ten students designated to be a Torch Scholar.

Fast forward, and today you will find that Flo is thriving in her third year at Northeastern, she consistently makes the Dean’s List and was recently awarded the prestigious Junior Scholar Award. She continues to be an integral part of the Future 5.
